Last Friday night I went to my first ever Rooftop Concert in Provo, UT. Having never been to one before I was surprised to see the amount of people that came out to hear some music and hang out in downtown Provo. Ever since moving up to Draper, I rarely enjoy going back to Utah County, but due to the evening’s lineup I felt compelled to jump in my car and make the trip. Headlining the night’s concert was a Tom Petty cover band comprised of local musicians, and opening was Provo’s own hip hop duo Chance Lewis and APT. For anyone who has not heard Chance Lewis or APT’s music, I would definitely recommend it. I try to catch them live whenever I can, and I definitely respect both their efforts to bring some good hip hop music not just to Provo, but to Utah as a whole. This was probably the best live set I have personally seen them play, bringing up several different local musicians to add a new twist to every song, and even throwing on a Tom Petty inspired beat to cater to the night’s crowd. For some good back story of their efforts to play a Rooftop Concert, which typically is only open to indie rock bands, check out Chance Lewis’s blog. For the main event I really was not sure what to expect out of a Tom Petty cover band, but I was pleasantly surprised to hear a group of musicians take some classic songs and really make them their own. For each song the band was spot on with their playing, but for me the songs became hit and miss depending on who had the job of lead vocals. Some were stronger and more confident while others seemed to struggle to find their voice on stage. The break out performance of the night was when the lead singer from the Neon Trees, Tyler Glenn, grabbed the mic and showed his home town exactly why he has risen to national fame. It wasn’t even his vocal prowess that impressed me, but his confidence on the stage that seemed to grab people’s eyes and ears. Only negative thing I can say about the rooftop concert is to point out their equipment malfunction. During the last song of the night the power went out mid song. At first I thought the city of Provo maybe pulls the plug at 10, but since it was only 9:45 something definitely went wrong. Technical difficulties aside it’s awesome to see a night of free music with the back drop of Provo’s majestic mountains. Anytime a group of people put forth effort to build their community and culture it’s a great thing, and the Rooftop Concert Series in Provo, UT is definitely doing just that Short iPhone videos Chance Lewis and APT on Spotify
