Taking a look back on some of the things I liked most during 2012. Favorite Movie: Moonrise Kingdom I have been a fan of Wes Anderson movies for awhile. Visually they are impactful to me, and I appreciate the details in color and design that is expressed in almost every aspect of each of his films. Beyond that stories are always interesting and pull me in. Moonrise Kingdom had all of these elements, and although it was not my favorite Wes Anderson film, it still was my favorite movie from 2012. Favorite Album: The Lumineers by The Lumineers This album I had stumbled across on Spotify, but quickly began hearing the song “Ho Hey” pop up on late night talk shows and car commercials. The whole album is really solid, and I can’t think of a bad track on the whole thing. It essentially became the soundtrack to my summer of 2012, with the highlight being listening to it on a quick trip through Yellowstone. The sound of The Lumineers pulls from a lot of directions, but for me it is quintessential American. Folk, Gospel, Country, Rock. In some ways The Lumineers became a Jack Johnson type of album that I feel no one could hate, but less repetitive the aforementioned Johnson. Hopefully 2013 will bring more music from this group. Favorite Rap Song: “Ruby ‘81” by Aesop Rock The album Skelethon, released in 2012, was yet another cohesive contribution to the world or rap music by the almost mythical Aesop Rock. The stand out track for me was “Ruby ’81.” Not only does it tell a story that I don’t believe is just another cliché retelling of tired old rap traditions, but sonically the beat pulls everything together while almost contributing to the story itself. Favorite Concert: Atmosphere at the Venue, SLC, UT This was hard for me. I went to a lot of great concerts last year, but this one was definitely the best. I have seen Atmosphere in concert about 5 different times, and each one he manages to bring in something different, and put unheard nuances into even his most knows songs. Each show the groups front man Slug, AKA Sean Daley, takes time to walk amongst the concert goers. This time around I was greeted with a hand shake, and sincere “Thanks you for coming out tonight.” That is something you just don’t see from many music groups big or small. Favorite Thing I Ate: Steak my wife Melanie Cooked If each year was measured by how many steaks one eats, than 2012 would have been a momentous year for sure. Beyond the trips to Texas Roadhouse, cooking steaks at home is always delicious. However one steak stands out over the rest. It was summer time and Melanie and I had decided to grab something to cook at the market closest to our house. We got two top sirloin steaks, fresh green beans, white potatoes and sweet potatoes. Once back at our place, Melanie put onto our steaks something that can only be described as an unholy amount of butter. I might have taken a few years off of my life eating that butter filled piece of meaty perfection, but at least I will die fat and happy. Favorite Photo I took: Seattle Boat Best photo comes from late in the year. The sun wasn’t awake yet, but I was sitting with Melanie, her mom and brother waiting to catch a ferry to Vancouver Island. I was forced out of our warm car to retrieve my passpost, and in doing so saw it, a boat sitting on black glassy waves, with lights subtly reflecting off the water. Almost made me want to go work on a boat, then I remembered how cold it was. Favorite Trip: Peru I wrote extensively about this trip in a blog post here, Peru! Needles to say, it was challenging but unforgettable. I love traveling, and love coming back home just as much. Favorite Purchase: New Car
I have been married just over two years, but in 2012 we purchased our fourth car. Hopefully this lives longer than number one and two. It is Melanie’s daily driver, but I love it too. It is a 2008 red Honda civic, plain and simple to most, but for us it is luxury at its finest. Best of all it has finally forced me to learn how to drive a manual transmission.
