Between it raining all day, and this being the first Twilight Concert to charge admission, I assumed the crowd would be smaller than it was. Unfortunately there was still a heavy mix of drunks, d-bags and people who couldn’t care less about the music. The award of the night definitely goes to a group of guys wearing camo shorts and basketball jerseys. One of them had a statue of liberty hat on, and at one point started spraying people with a can of silly string while his drunken friend made out with a fat girl. I should have snapped a photo. People aside, the music overall was good. My wife Melanie and I skipped the opening act for a family BBQ, but made it in time for Beach House. The first 30 minutes of their set was a bit uninspired for me. I really love Beach House’s music, but seeing them live just made me realize how similar all of their songs really are. Also the guitarist, Alex Scally, was sitting down for the first half of their set which just gave me the impression that they weren’t trying very hard. On the positive side of things, Beach House playing live did sound very true to their recordings. Nothing is worse than a group who sounds terrible live because most of their “talent” is actually just studio magic and auto tune. Once the sun went down Beach House really hit their stride playing some different songs that really got the crowd going, and their stage backdrop and effects added some excitement and movement to their music. Best part of the night was their last two encore songs, which left their vocalist, Victoria Legrand, belting out the notes and got their guitarist finally up and moving. The only surprise of the night was having a third person up on the stage. I thought the group was strictly a guy girl duo, but for this live show they traded in their drum machine and loops for a real person. Overall the show was a 7/10, definitely worth the $5.
