Last weekend I decided to go visit my wife Melanie down in St George, UT, where the photo above was taken. I was only there for Saturday night and Sunday, but we still managed to have some fun. I left late on Saturday, so I had time to get things to listen to on the drive, and to pack. The drive there was pretty, and relaxing. I listened to a book on tape called Outliers by Malclm Gladwell. The book essentially examines why some people become extremely successful, or as Gladwell says it, how someone becomes an outlier. Examples that he explores includes the likes of Bill Gates and the Beatles. Each outlier's success came down to a few basic things. First they worked hard, applying what Gladwell calls the 10,000 hour rule, which is basically 10,000 hours of practicing the thing a person or group becomes successful at. Second each outlier has had a string of remarkable if not impossible circumstances that culminated in making them what they now are. There were lots of other great points that this book makes, but I would definitely recommend it as a good read, or in my case, a listen. When the book was finished I listened to Wolf by Tyler the Creator. This album and artist is definitely not for everyone. I honestly liked the uniqueness of this album, and his music video from the albums first single is at least interesting to watch even if you don't like the music. I cant help but think when I listen to some of this guys music, that he is simply a less popular Eminem for the younger internet obsessed generation. Sunday was Easter, and Melanie and I decided to just explore around St George. Our first stop was the Temple. It is very pretty, and its whiteness stands in great contrast against the red rocks of the area. I was surprised to learn later that the Temple itself is built form the same red rocks, but is covered with a white plaster. From the Temple we went to Brigham Young's winter home, where he spent most winters during the last years of his life. We took a tour of the home, given by a nice older missionary couple, and took away from the tour one main point. We definitely have things easier today. Whether its our ease of travel, cooking, cleaning or simply just having a mattress that does not actually have bed bugs, we should all be a little more thankful for out modern luxuries. Two specific things from the tour I remember. One. this bed frame below was apparently painted red using ox blood. Second, their piano had a rectangular shape so that it could fit into the bed of a wagon. After Brigham's house we had a quick lunch, and went for a short hike on some rocks that overlooked the city. The worst slash funniest part of the day was going with Melanie's roommate to find a Laundromat so they could do their Laundry. Similar to the Brigham Young house, this Laundromat made me appreciate what I have, which is my own washer and dryer at home. The people you encounter at this wonderful establishment come from all walks of life. My favorite was an older lady that was wearing an all white lace outfit, and looked like, as Melanie described, a Dolly Parton impersonator. Although, her personality seemed far to large to be imitating anyone but herself. Runner up in the Laundromat people awards went to the lady who tied her dog's leash to the side view mirror of her car as she went inside. All and all St George seems like a great place, old people and palm tree everywhere. Spotify Playlist.
