When me and Andrew Hermansen meet about 3 years ago we formed a rap duo, and called it Vinyl Monster. Although most of what we have made is yet to be officially released, it has been a great learning experience for both of us. We have played several shows at the Muse, and different house parties, but back on January 5th I think we had our best performance yet. We were lucky enough to be invited to play at Kilby Court with some incredible local musicians, all passionate about the music they make. The most surreal part about having our amateur rap experiment play at Kilby Court, was that over the years I have seen so many of my own music idols play there. In fact going to Kilby Court’s website to check out upcoming concerts is a weekly ritual of mine, so it was especially strange to see Vinyl Monster’s name in the upcoming shows column. We were the opening act, and had about 25 minutes to get through our set. I had decided in advance to try a new set up for the show, and left Andrew alone on the mic, while I banged the beats out on my MPC 1000. I had a few technical difficulties with my set up, but overall it was fun to be up on stage and add some live elements to each song. A huge thanks to everyone that came out in the cold to see us play, and support our music. Also a huge thanks to Winning Monroe, who helped our last song be one of our best. For those who missed it out, here are a few of our songs from the show. After our set it was a rush to get my stuff off the stage for the next act, Dumb Luck. He is a very impressive rapper, and you can tell he has refined his skills through years of performing and doing rap battles. Definitely check out his new album Lo-Fi but So Fly. After Dumb Luck was the debut of Don Donald. I had heard him free style at different shows down in Provo, and it was cool to see him play a whole set. As the newest member of the House of Lewis collective I am sure Don Donald will make some great music, and hopefully he will even grace some of my beats in the near future. Up next was the Apt and Chance Lewis. Every time I see these two perform they get better. This performance was no exception; the one surprise was Apt performing a song with one of my beats. It was awesome to hear what he had done with it, and made me excited about a future project him. Also, everyone needs to do their ears a favor, and listen to Chance Lewis’s new album We’re Just Happy To Be Here. After every Chance Lewis performance I am left signing his chorus lines for days. Another champion of the local hip hop scene playing that night was Yze. He raps, produces and can even sing. He brings a passion to his performances that anyone can feel and appreciate. Last to play was Atheist. I had listened to his album Thanks For The Burgers before the show and was excited to see how it would translate live. I was not disappointed, and I would go out on a limb to say his was the best performance of the night. Not only was I impressed by the music and the delivery, but I laughed harder than I have in quite some time thanks to his performance and well written lyrics. If you listen to one rap song this year it should be “Mikey Was the Best.” I will be lucky to do a song with Atheist in the future. Last, but certainty not least, I nearly forgot the DJ of the evening DJ Skratchmo. He spined everyone's songs flawlessly and with style. He is very talented at what he does and makes me wish I knew more about how to DJ, It is always great spending the night with friends and great music. Hopefully this show wont be my last performance of the year.
Last thing if anyone has not done it yet go download Vinyl Monster's Winter EP!
